Abstract

The corrosion kinetics of Aluminum 7068-Zirconium dioxide composites is a major aspect for assessing the capability of utilizing the materials for aviation segments. Aluminum 7068 matrix is a particular class of composite which is known for its high strength characteristics even in critical situations and is utilized as a part of aerospace, automobile and ordinance applications. However the investigations on impact of reinforcements, for instance zirconium dioxide on corrosion conduct of Aluminum 5083 matrix has not yet been completed; Even though, there is a vast literature available to give an overview of the mechanical and tribological characteristics, the corrosion attributes of the composites are not yet examined. The present work includes the production of Aluminum – zirconium dioxide composites and investigation of the corrosion conduct of these composites. The composites are processed en - route stir casting by incorporating zirconium di oxide particulates in the intervals of 2 Wt. % over a range of 0 Wt. % to 12 Wt. %. The composite specimens subsequently prepared are assessed for corrosion by various test techniques to be specific, Weight loss test, Open circuit Potential test and Potentiodynamic test. The procedures in weight loss technique included the suspension of the specimens (20 mm width and 20 mm length) in Hydrochloric medium (HCl) and Sodium Hydroxide (NaOH) medium for a period of 120 hours (5 days); The weight loss techniques adopted is used to get the corrosion kinetics of the composite by evaluating the corrosion rate in mils per year using a generalized empirical formula. There is a reduction in the corrosion rate with the increase in Wt. % of Zirconium dioxide for the time period ranging from 24 hours to 168 hours and it nearly achieved a consistent state towards the end of 168 hours. This is basically due to the fact that The electrolyte considered for potentio-dynamic test is NaOH and HCl. The concentrations of both the acidic and basic electrolyte considered in present work are taken at 1.0 M. Keywords: corrosion, kinetics, acidic, basic, aluminium, zircon dioxide, composite.
