Abstract

Dy- and Fe-doped hydroxyapatite (HAp) was synthesized by the facile aqueous precipitation method. The samples were characterized by using powder X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy. In this work, the antibacterial activities of Dy- and Fe-doped HAp were tested against gram-positive (Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis) and gram-negative (Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae and Pseudomonas putida) bacteria by agar diffusion test. It was found that Dy(5)-and Fe(5)-doped HAp materials show superior antibacterial activity as compared to some of the earlier reported doped HAp materials. Cytotoxicity of Dy- and Fe-doped HAp against in vitro human epithelial carcinoma cell line (HeLa) was studied in a dose-dependent manner. The results reveal that Dy- and Fe-doped HAp can act as a potential material for antibacterial and biomedical applications. Keywords: antibacterial activity, cytotoxicity, HeLa cells, hydroxyapatite
