Prevalence and Risk Factors of Prehypertension among Adults Aged 30–44 Years in West Java, Indonesia
Abstract
Prehypertension is influenced by various factors including genetic, environmental and lifestyle factors. Aims: The present study was aimed to describe the prevalence and risk factors of prehypertension among adults aged 30–44 years in West Java, Indonesia. Settings and Design: The study design was a cross-sectional approach using secondary data from the ‘Cohort Study of Non-Communicable Diseases (NCD)’ conducted in Kebon Kalapa Village, Bogor City, West Java, Indonesia in 2017. Materials and Methods: This descriptive study used a structured questionnaire to collect primary data distributed to respondents after obtaining their consent. Nutritional status and blood pressure (BP) data were collected from the participants. A 24-h dietary recall was conducted to collect nutrient intake data. Statistical analysis: Data were analysed using IBM SPSS software version 24.0. Results: The prevalence of prehypertension in this study was found to be 36.3%. Bivariate analysis revealed that nutritional status was associated with prehypertension. Conclusions: The present study showed that prehypertension is common among adults aged 30–44 years and obesity was the main factor associated with prehypertension.
