OPTIMIZATION OF EDM PARAMETERS USING PARTICLE SWARM OPTIMIZATION ALGORITHM

S. Magesh Kumar

Abstract

Aluminium metal matrix composites are increasing the applications such as automobile industries, aerospace industries ,marine as well as construction. The use of nonconventional machining techniques in shaping aluminum metal matrix composites has generated extensive interest as the manufacturing of complicated contours such as dies. Electrical discharge machining (EDM) tends to be a promising technique for machining metal matrix composites. Hybrid Al6061 composite reinforced with 10% SiC and 4% Graphite particles is fabricated using Stir casting process. Moreover, a central composite rotatable design and Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) analysis are done to study the surface characteristics of the specimens. The effect of parameters including Current (I), Pulse on Time (T), Voltage (V) and Flushing pressure (P) reflects on Metal Removal Rate (MRR) of the specimen which in turns to developing mathematical models with the help of RSM by using MATLAB software . Particle Swarm Optimization techniques is used to optimize the response.
