Abstract

Recycling plastic is the procedure of retrieving waste plastic products and reprocessing the material into similar or sometimes completely different form of products. As an example, melting down soft drink bottles, boxes and then casting them as plastic chairs and tables. According to the ImpEE project of University of Cambridge, 3 million tonnes of waste plastic were produced a year (2005) in UK and among those 21.3% are produced from PET (Polyethylene Terephthalate) bottles. There are several automatic sortation methods are available, but manual sortation technology is the most used procedure. The overall objective of this short report is to describe and discuss sortation and sorting technologies used to identify and separate waste plastic objects. Besides, this paper will address different levels/locations where sorting takes place (e.g. at the point of discard or generation, at the collection pick-up point, at a centralized location for mixed recyclables, etc.).
