Performance of High Volume Fly Ash Concrete Using Local Power Plant Fly Ash

Abstract


Total production of fly ash in Indian Thermal Power plants is approximately 160 million tons annually. Except some super power plants, the quality of fly ash is said to be inferior in most of the power plants. The suitability of fly ash from local power plants for production of high volume fly ash (HVFA) concrete is not tested so far. The aim of the present investigation is to ascertain whether the fly ash produced by local power plant (Eastern region in India), can suitably be used for production of HVFA concrete. Therefore, the performance in terms of strength parameters, i.e., compressive, split tensile and flexural strengths of such composites have been studied and compared with those of conventional concrete. Moreover, silica fume (SF) as an admixture has also been added (5% and 10% by weight) to improve the strength parameters of HVFA concrete mixes and the results are found to be satisfactory.
