EFFECT OF OPTIMIZED COMPOSITION OF TAP HOLE CLAY ON THE BLAST FURNACE

R. S. Kumar

Abstract

Tap hole clay is used for plugging the tap hole in blast furnace during its operation. The quality of clay depends on raw materials, particle size, binders and manufacturing process. The clay quality requirement and its design depend on the production capacity of the furnace. Consistent and proper quality of clay enhances the productivity and life of furnace. Tap hole clay is a mixture of six to seven ingredients in a lump form. The clay is extruded using mud gun or clay gun in to the tap hole. In the present work an attempt has been made to develop new composition of the tap hole mass to enhance the performance of the blast furnace, by varying the alumina content of normally used tap hole clay. The developed optimized tap hole clay was used in blast furnace and the performance of the furnace operation was studied. It was found that developed clay with less percentage of alumina can be used for successful and improved performance of the blast furnace operation.
