Effect of Alumina Content on Properties of Tap Hole Clay for Improved Blast Furnace Operation

R. Sivakumar, K. Srinivasa Rao

Abstract

Tap hole clay is used to seal the tap hole in blast furnace during its operation. Tap hole clay is a plastic refractory used in the iron making blast furnace. The quality of clay decides the tapping duration, slag duration, and tap hole related problems. The clay quality requirement and its design depend on the production capacity of the furnace. Consistent and proper quality of clay enhances the productivity and life of furnace. Variability and inadequate understanding of the behavior of tap hole clays has lead to problem in the blast furnace operation. Understanding the factors that affect the tap hole clay may reduce the variability and increase the knowledge of how tap hole clay behaves in the furnace. In the present work an attempt has been made to develop new composition of the tap hole to enhance the performance of the blast furnace, by varying the alumina content. Basic tests of apparent porosity (AP), bulk density (BD) and cold crushing strength (CCS) were conducted to determine the quality of the clay. Design of experiments was used to ascertain the effect of alumina on CCS.
