Failure Prediction of Composite Lamina

Iffat R Arisa

Abstract

Composite materials are preferable in many applications of engineering than their metallic equivalent. These materials provide desirable characteristics and required properties for specific design and testing. In orthotropic fiber composites, the fiber orientation dictates the material properties, because the properties can be built into the laminate during fabrication. In this study, a composite laminate is tested with a specific configuration whether it would fail or survive under specific load. If Tsai Wu index is more than one, the composite layers would fail. Training data set is developed by Finite Element analysis of the composite laminate layers. This training set is used as the input of Fuzzy system MLFE and RLS. Classical lamination theory used to develop a data set to evaluate the performance of the fuzzy system.

Keywords – Composite laminate, composite lamina, strength index, failure criteria.
