A Model to Study the Effect of Homogeneous Nucleation and Emulsifier Amounts on Methyl Methacrylate Emulsion Polymerization in a Seeded Semi-batch Reactor

Swati Gangwar, Ashwini Sood

Abstract

ABSTRACT
An extensive model is developed for methyl methacrylate emulsion polymerization. The assumption of monodispersed particle size distribution is used in developing the model. It is found that inclusion of homogeneous nucleation in the model leads to under prediction of variation of conversion with time. The effects of three different emulsifier amounts on the variation of conversion with time at 50°C isothermal reactor operation, keeping all the other ingredients constant are studied by the model. Inclusion of free radicals exited from the particles in the aqueous phase radical balance leads to a close agreement between model predictions and experimental data for the variation of conversion with time.
