Abstract

Fibre reinforced plastics (FRPs) represent an interesting class of composite materials that is gaining importance in the fabrication of various mechanical components as a substitute for metals and alloys, particularly lightweight and high strength pressure vessels for compressed gas storage. They are an important component of hydrogen energy system for vehicular applications, where compact and safe on-board storage of hydrogen gas as a fuel at high pressures of up to 700 bar in pressure vessels will be required. This work briefly summarizes the types of FRPs currently in use, manufacturing technology for FRP pressure vessels, the important mechanical properties and machining technologies relevant for compressed gas storage vessels and the problems and prospects associated with this novel material of construction Alkaline water electrolysis; process economics; sustainable hydrogen; renewable energy; Indian scenario; production cost
