Madhusudhan M, Mahesha K

Abstract

The current work emphasis on the tribological characterization of Zirconium dioxide (Zirconia, ZrO2) particulates reinforced Aluminium 7068 metal matrix composites for different process variables established following design of experiments methodology and consequent taguchi based validation techniques for wear prediction. The pin on disc wear test is carried out on specimens fabricated enroute ultrasonic assisted stir casting with controlled dispersion of 12 Wt.% of ZrO2 and subsequent machining of the castings to dimensions of 8 mm diameter and 25 mm length established in accordance with ASTM E 122 standards for choice of specimen size on an EN 32 steel disc as per ASTM G99 – 17 standards given in book of standards volume 03.02 developed by G02.40 subcommittee and ASTM G99 – 95a for establishing process variables on laboratory scale selected as load, speed and time. The load considered for design of experiments involving factorial parameters in three levels are 40 N, 70 N, 100 N, while the speed considered for design of experiments involving factorial parameters in three levels are 150 rpm, 200 rpm and 250 rpm and the time is considered in three levels as 15 minutes, 30 minutes and 45 minutes. The experimental results obtained as per ASTM E 178 standards for Aluminium – 12 Wt. % Zirconium dioxide composites are validated using taguchi analysis for evaluating the rank of the process variable that has a significant influence on the wear characteristics of the composite specimen. Furthermore the wear and coefficient of friction are also predicted for each of the sliding conditions and a confirmation validation is carried out to check the authenticity of the taguchi prediction with the experimental results. In addition to it, SEM images of the wear track in the specimens is captured to evaluate the wear mechanism in the specimens.
