Abstract

The effect of different concentrations of tungstate and nitrite ions as corrosion inhibitors on the corrosion behavior of the sputter-deposited ternary Cr–10Zr–10W alloy was studied in 0.5 M NaCl solution open to air at 25±1°C using corrosion tests and corrosion potential measurement. The use of both the tungstate and nitrite ions enhanced the corrosion resistance properties of the alloy in 0.5 M NaCl solution. It is found that the tungstate and nitrite are strongly adsorbed on the alloy surface by physical adsorption, not by the chemisorption. As a result the corrosion resistance property of the alloys was found to be significantly increased with increasing the concentration of the corrosion inhibitors of tungstate and nitrite. The corrosion rate of the Cr–10Zr–10W alloy was decreased with increasing the concentrations of both the tungstate and nitrite up to 2400 ppm.
