Nanomedical applications of Chitosan – A brief overview

T. R. Heera, Gengan Saravanan

Abstract

Chitin and chitosan are versatile biopolymers that can be subjected to several structural changes by altering them chemically and mechanically to develop desirable properties, functions and applications. Chitin and chitosan have remarkable potential for nanomedical applications because of their significant properties such as biocompatibility, biodegradability and non-toxicity. These biopolymers have the ability to be easily processed in the form of gels, sponges, membranes, beads and scaffolds. This review deals with the recent research on various nanomedical applications of chitosan based nanomaterials in the field of tissue engineering, wound dressing, drug delivery, cancer diagnosis, antiaging cosmetics. Keywords: Nanomedicine, tissue engineering, wound dressing, chitosan
