Synthesis and characterization of Calcium Alginate Nanoparticle for Drug Delivery Application

Satakshi Chaturvedi

Abstract

The polymeric nanoparticles (PNPs) are prepared from biocompatible and biodegradable polymers such as chitosan, gelatin, sodium alginate and albumin in size between 10-1000 nm where the drug is dissolved, entrapped, encapsulated or attached to a nanoparticle matrix. Their nanometer-size promotes effective permeation through cell membranes and stability in the blood stream. These smart PNPs are widely used as carriers in the pharmaceutical sector for controlled release in drug delivery. In present work we prepared calcium alginate nanoparticles that are known as excellent carrier in drug delivery as well as a novel encapsulation agent for drugs. Calcium alginate nanoparticles are synthesized by ionic gelation method using polymer as (sodium alginate) and calcium chloride (base). We further characterized these particles to get the mean size and the topographic images so as to know the structural properties of the calcium alginate nanoparticles by DLS and AFM analysis respectively.
