Abstract

Composite material consisting randomly oriented coir fibres and epoxy resin have been studied. This study tends to analyze the tensile properties of coir fibre (10mm length) reinforced with epoxy resin by treating with Na0H and KMn04 of different concentrations. Fibers are bonded together with epoxy resin by hand layup process and cured at room temperature for 24 hours to form composite. Different tensile properties of composite were investigated in accordance with ASTM standards. In our study we found that upon pre-treatment of coir fibres with 2%, 4% and 6% aq. NaOH, coir fibres treated with 4% aq. NaOH exhibited maximum tensile strength. Whereas when coir fibres are treated with 0.05%, 0.1% and 0.2% aq. KMnO4, fibres treated with 0.05% KMn04 exhibited maximum tensile strength.
