Compatibilizing Effect of Modified Polypropylene on the Properties of Polypropylene/Organically Modified Layered Silicate Nanocomposites

Haydar U. Zaman, Ruhul A. Khan

Abstract

In the present research paper, a series of polypropylene (PP) nanocomposites containing 3, 5, and 7 wt% of an organically modified layered silicate (OM) were prepared via direct melt mixing in the presence of maleic anhydride grafted polypropylene (indicated as PP-g-MA, PPMA), and hexamethylenediamine-modified maleic anhydride grafted polypropylene (marked as PP-g-HMDA, PPHMDA) as compatibilizing agent at concentration of 10 wt%. Subsequently the influences of the compatibilizer on the morphological, mechanical, thermal and rheological features of nanocomposites was characterized. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images of PP/PPHMDA/OM nanocomposites revealed that most of the swellable silicate layers were exfoliated and indiscriminately distributed in the PP matrix. Better dispersion and exfoliation state of OM was performed by adding PPHMDA instead of PPMA. PP/PPHMDA/OM nanocomposites were found to have the most continuous and uniform size. Mechanical evaluations of PP/PPHMDA/OM showed better improvement in strength, modulus, hardness, and lesser elongation at break compared to PP/PPMA/OM and PP/OM nanocomposites. The addition of compatibilizers with OM enhances the thermal features and rheological behavior of nanocomposite, with which compatibilizers impose strong interfacial interactions
