Production of Paint Using Locally Sourced Materials

Ekperi N. I, Uku P. E, Wecheonwu B. C

Abstract

In this research work, a prototype mixer was fabricated particularly for the purpose of this research in which paint production was carried out. For the processing, two formulations were used with the same composition but differs in extender pigment. Calcium carbonate was considered and used as an extender pigment which gives white coloured paint with titanium oxide as prime pigment. This was due to the colour of the periwinkle shell which was used at the time of the preparation. However, bleached periwinkle shell was considered using JIK which fails to give desired colour as dove gray coloured paint was produced instead. Hence, paint production can be carried out with calcium carbonate periwinkle shell as extender pigments with calcium carbonate preferable periwinkle shell in terms of the availability, cost of production and the desired end-colour.
