The Current and Potential Usage Areas of Shape Memory Polymer Composites in the Class of Multifunctional Materials

Melih Soner Celiktas, Merve UYAN

Abstract

Shape memory polymer composites can be programmed into a temporary shape and recover their original shape by applying different stimuli as temperature, UV, magnetic and electrical. In this way, SMPCs in the active and deformable material class, due to its advantages such as being activated by various activation methods and good biocompatibility properties, it has become the focus of research in the field of creating multifunctional materials. They are widely used in many fields thanks to their ability to solve problems in different application areas and to be exposed to deformation under different stimuli. In this study, the use of SMPCs in application areas such as biomedical, aerospace and 3D printing is discussed. Additionally, the advantages and disadvantages of SMPCs for different application areas are presented, and the potential of use of SMPCs in different application areas is revealed.
